Looking out over Rome: places to enjoy the view of the Eternal City from above

Getting lost in the alleys of Rome, walking among the ancient ruins is certainly an unforgettable experience, but who of us has never wanted to admire the capital from above? Rome offers panoramic points, each of them with its own particularity,  from where you can enjoy a wonderful view:

GIANICOLO

From this hill, located on the right bank of the Tiber, just from the belvedere near the statue of Garibaldi, you can admire fascinating views of the historical center.

VICTORIAN TERRACES

From the Terrazza delle Quadrighe, at the top of the Vittoriano complex, you can enjoy a truly breathtaking view. Two panoramic lifts, inaugurated in 2007, allow you to reach the highest point of the complex, from which you can admire Rome at 360 °.

The view reaches the magnificence of the Colosseum and the Fori Imperiali, the churches of the historical center, the Tiber, the Jewish Getto, the Piazza del Campidoglio, the Quirinale and from the modern Eur district to the characteristic Castelli Romani.

PINCIO

From here, on the splendid terrace of Piazza Napoleone I, you can appreciate one of the most beautiful views of the world. No one can remain immune in front of such a view of the historical center of Rome.

GIARDINO DEGLI ARANCI

On top of one of the most elegant hills of Rome, the Aventino, between the medieval walls, remains of the ancient fortress of the Savelli family there is Parco Savello (also called Giardino degli Aranci), a small garden. From here you can enjoy a wonderful view of Rome that goes from the bend of the Tiber to the Basilica of San Pietro.

DOME OF ST. PETER

You have to climb 537 steps of the long spiral climb, called “Sant’Andrea snail” before arriving at the panoramic external gallery of the Dome of St. Peter. From here you can admire Rome at 360 °: the monuments, the villas, the gardens, the Tiber…

THE VIEW FROM THE PALAZZO DELLE SCUDERIE DEL QUIRINALE

A breathtaking window for a view from the “highest” of the Seven Hills, the stained glass window designed during the renovation of the Scuderie del Quirinale is certainly one of the attractions of the new Roman exhibition site.

From the Altare della Patria to the domes of the churches, from the roofs of the houses in the districts of the historic center to the Gianicolo, Monte Mario and Pincio.

There are hundreds of curiosities to discover or recognize by observing Rome from these privileged points of view.

The legend of Santa Maria Maggiore

The legend of Santa Maria Maggiore

The Basilica of S. Maria Maggiore, located on the top of the Esquiline Hill, is one of the four papal basilicas of Rome. It is also known as “Liberiana” from the legend that traditionally connects it to Pope Liberius and according to which, in 352 AD, the pope dreamed of the Madonna telling him to build a church where he found snow. When it snowed on the Esquiline one morning in August, in the midst of a torrid Roman summer, the Pope built the church called “Santa Maria della Neve”. The miracle of the snow is remembered every year, on 5th of August, in a function during which white petals are dropped from the ceiling of the Pauline Chapel.
Santa Maria Maggiore was built right on the small church of Santa Maria della Neve or on its legend as no material ruins have been found, but only some testimonies. It is the only one to have preserved the original early Christian structure, preserves the wonderful mosaics of the V in the central nave and the XIII century in the apse and a coffered ceiling that leaves you breathless. It was decorated with the first load of gold from the new lands discovered in America given to Pope Alexander VI by the Spanish crown. In short, although not always chosen as a privileged tourist destination, it is a must!

Rome dressed in white: the snowfall of February 26th

Rome dressed in white: the snowfall of February 26th

The historic snowfall of the last February 26th thrilled all roman people, not accustomed to similar episodes, and the rest of the world, which was amazed by the enchanted photos of the city. A snowfall that stopped the city but that could not do anything but observe a show we didn’t see since 2012. In the night between 3 and 4 February 2012, the snow whitened the city leaving in some areas a surface of 20 centimeters. Also on that occasion, the snowfall paralyzed the city, but at the same time it excited roman people, who did not see one so important for almost 30 years.
We must go back to January 1985 to find another episode so significant: the snowfall occurred on January 6th, the day of the Epiphany. Or even in 1971, with several centimeters of accumulation. Going back in time we find the snow of 1956, still remembered as one of the most important.
Returning to the show of a few days ago, many people immortalized the unusual setting of a whitewashed Rome in photos and videos. So many inconveniences, of course. But the snow-covered Eternal City is such an extraordinary and unique show. In fact, the images of Rome, which woke up under a blanket of snow, are wandering around the world. The Colosseum, the Fori Imperiali, San Pietro, Villa Borghese: the beauty of these places fixed in time is enhanced by the purity of the flakes that fell down.
Here we collected some shots not to forget this magical moment and to capture the eyes of the whole world to the wonder of a Rome dressed in white.

Street Art at Ostiense district

Street Art at Ostiense district

The Ostiense district was born at the beginning of the twentieth century as a district of modernity. Here the first power station in Rome is placed as well as the gas station and factories that will project the eternal city in the modern era. Precisely in this area, in a spontaneous form, one of the most important expressions of contemporary creativity such as the street art found its ideal location in that post-industrial setting . The Ostiense district has been defined by the international press as the place where you can participate, see and breathe the creative, artistic and cultural ferment of the city. An unprecedented and unexpected ultra-contemporary Rome.

Over the years this public art activity on the city of Rome has been concentrated in the area of VIII Town Hall and in particular in the Ostiense area, in a quadrant that goes from Piramide to San Paolo with a surprising result: this area has over thirty large public works that have now become the object of guided tours and more generally of  an  independent cultural tourism.

These are the artists present in the Ostiense District:
